Report: Dave Martinez a favorite for Washington Nationals job

The Chicago Cubs announced some changes to their coaching staff on Thursday and they might have to announce a few more soon.

Bench coach Dave Martinez might be the next coach the Cubs will have to replace and he might be headed to the team the Cubs knocked out in the 2017 NLDS.

Martinez is reportedly the early favorite to get the manager job for the Washington Nationals according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal who tweeted this on Friday morning:

#Nationals interviewed John Farrell today, sources tell The Athletic. Dave Martinez front-runner for job, per sources and @jorgecastillo.

— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) October 27, 2017

He arrived in Chicago in 2015 with Joe Maddon and has been a candidate for a few managerial positions. Martinez was interviewed for the Tampa Bay Rays job after Maddon went to Chicago but was not one of the three finalists.

This time around it appears as if Martinez will get the job.

Heres what Jon Heyman wrote for FanRag Sports about Martinez and the Nationals:

“Martinez, who has interviewed for many managerial jobs, is seen as the right man for the job, at least by some people in the organization. It’s also a positive sign for him that the Nats are believed to be moving fast in their managerial search and hoping to have a new skipper in the week after the World Series.”

With the Yankees also in search of a manager after firing Joe Girardi, the Nationals may act fast. If Martinez does leave the Cubs, the team has some interesting options to replace him.

The first one being thrown out there is former catcher David Ross who spent two seasons with the team. Another one is Mark DeRosa who spent two seasons with the Cubs in 2007 and 2008.

DeRosa was the sixth candidate for the New York Mets managerial job but was not hired.
