Report: J’Marcus Webb Agrees To A Pay Cut

Webb has been with the Bears since 2010.

LAKE FOREST- In the midst of all of the moves that the Bears made over the weekend, none could have been bigger than the one involving offensive tackle J’Marcus Webb. CSN Chicago reported late last night that the embattled big man has agreed to take a pay cut.

According to the report, Webb has agreed to slash his pay by 50-percent. This means that instead of making the $1.323 million in base salary he was originally going to make in 2013, he will now receive the fourth-year minimum of $630,000.

This is of course providing that he even makes the 2013 regular season roster. Drafted in the seventh round out of West Texas A&M in 2010, Webb was brought in to improve a shaky offensive line. He started 44 regular season games at left tackle, but he struggled more often than not.

2012 was probably his worst season in a Bears uniform. Heading into 2013, Webb had his work cut out for him as Bears general manager Phil Emery invested heavily in the offensive line during the offseason.

At one point earlier this summer, things were starting to look up for the 25-year-old. First was the Gabe Carimi trade which was sure to give Webb more reps during minicamps and OTAs. Next was the injury to Jonathan Scott which allowed Webb to move up the list in training camp.

When the Bears took the field against Carolina in their preseason opener almost three weeks ago, Webb got the start at right tackle. He allowed Jay Cutler to get sacked twice in the first quarter and made some errors on run blocks as well.

From there was demoted to the second team where he was listed as the backup left tackle to Jermon Bushrod. Rookie Jordan Mills has been the starting right tackle ever since and has made quite the impression on the Bears’ coaching staff.

As for what exactly this means for J’Marcus Webb is unknown. Perhaps the Bears are looking to save cap space in case they do cut him and decide they want to bring somebody else in. Or the Bears just may keep the 330-pounder and are making him earn his money back by having the best season of his career.

We will definitely find out more during these final two weeks of the preseason. The Bears will get back on the practice field at Halas Hall today. Follow me on Twitter @GabeSalgado82
