Last night’s game which featured the San Francisco Giants against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field was definitely unusual. Anthony Rizzo blasted a 2 run homer out to Sheffield in the bottom of the 1st inning and that would end up being the only runs scored for the remainder of the game. The bottom of the 5th inning approached when a sudden downpour at Wrigley began. The rain lasted around 15 minutes but the Wrigley Field grounds crew had a difficult time putting the tarp on the field.

The tarp didn’t cover part of the infield properly which caused the rain to form a pond around second base. The grounds crew worked for over 4 hours straight trying to prepare the field for the game to resume. The game was ultimately called as the field was too wet and unsafe to play on. Cubs manager Rick Renteria also expressed his concerns about the field conditions and didn’t want his players on it. The victory went to the Cubs who would win with the final score of 2-0 over the Giants.

While the Cubs were satisfied with the outcome, the Giants were not. The Giants displayed their frustration towards the grounds crew who were unable to cover the infield properly which was ultimately the reason why the game was called. The Giants protested the rainout and reports are coming in that San Francisco has won their appeal and the game will resume where it left off in the 5th inning tomorrow (August 21st) at 4 PM CST. Meanwhile, last night also featured the Orioles and White Sox on the south side in Chicago and not a single drop of rain landed inside US Cellular Field.
