The 2018 season has started off how the Chicago White Sox imagined in another rebuilding year on the South Side. The White Sox weren’t expected to contend this season but they are off to just a 5-15 start and a half game up on the Kansas City Royals who are dead last in the AL Central.
Rick Hahn has done a wonderful job of acquiring young talent with the plan of getting that to the MLB roster within the next year or so. One of those big pieces acquired by Hahn was Yoan Moncada as part of the Chris Sale deal.
Moncada was called up last season for the White Sox and has been a starter everyday in 2018. He got off to a slow start this year but has started to turn things around and look better.
The 22-year-old still has a lot of potential and as the White Sox are in the middle of a series against the Mariners, he has a big fan in the opposing dugout.
NBC Sports Chicago’s Chuck Garfien sat down with Robinson Cano and the All-Star had nothing but great things to say about Moncada. When asked if he sees a little of Moncada in himself, he offered this response:
“I see a guy that can be a superstar in this game,” Cano said. “He can field, he can throw, he can hit. In the first game against us (Mariners), he was a hit away from the cycle. So a guy in what I’ve seen and what he shows, he’s got more time to mature and learn. He can hit right now, imagine 2-3 years in the league when he learns and he’s facing the same guys in a couple of years and will have a different approach. He’s gotta keep working hard.”
In 92 plate appearances this season Moncada is slashing .244/.352/.500 with four home runs, 10 RBI and 4 stolen bases. The second baseman has taken over as the everyday starter this year and the hope is that he shows a big plus in his development despite the White Sox struggles.
