Should the Chicago Bears target Dez Bryant?

The Dallas Cowboys and wide receiver Dez Bryant parted ways Friday as the Cowboys chose to release the veteran after he declined to take a pay cut. Bryant, who is a three-time pro-bowler, has seen his numbers decline since 2014 and following the absence of quarterback Tony Romo.

Although not being productive the last two seasons, Bryant could be an interesting free agent target for the Bears.

The Bears are currently thin at the wide receiver position following the departure of Cameron Meredith to the New Orleans Saints. The team signed free agents Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel earlier last month, but signing Bryant would certainly boost their receiving core.

Many believe Bryant’s decline in production is due in part to his age, but there is a correlation between his declining numbers and the presence of quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott over the last two seasons. Elliott has been the centerpiece of the Cowboys offense as he led the league in rushing yards and rushing attempts in 2016. Prescott, since taking over for Romo, has been effective by utilizing other options in the Cowboys offense such as Cole Beasley and Terrance Williams the last two seasons.

One goal for new Bears head coach Matt Nagy and his offense is to go deep down the field early and often. Bryant would help as he has been highly successful in his career as a deep threat wide receiver. Over his career, he has averaged 14 yards per catch and has averaged 9 touchdowns per season. He would be a highly valuable target to help further the growth of second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

There are expected to be many suitors for Bryant and it wouldn’t hurt the Bears to just to inquire about his services. If they were to sign him, it most likely would be on a short-term prove it deal to get the most out of him. Although signing Bryant isn’t a necessity, but it is a move that could only benefit the Bears and their new offense.
