Silva Stays Perfect As Cubs Sweep Rockies

The Cubs may be 5.5 games out of 1st place but they might end up with some hardware by season’s end.

Perhaps not a World Series championship, but more likely the Comeback Player of the Year award. Carlos Silva finished the 2009 campaign with a record of 1-3 and an ERA of 8.60. After 8 starts in 2010, Silva sits at a perfect 5-0 with an ERA of just 3.35. If Silva continues to anchor the back end of the Cubs’ rotation, he will be the most deserving candidate for Comeback Player of the Year.

After stealing game 3 from the Pirates, the Cubs welcomed Colorado to Wrigley for a short 2 game series. Of course Chicago won game 1 with a walk-off home run from Aramis Ramirez putting them in position for a sweep of their own.

Before game 2, Cubs’ GM Jim Hendry announced that Carlos Zambrano will be rejoining the rotation in the near future. He didn’t say who he will replace, leading to speculation between Carlos Silva and Tom Gorzelanny.

After hearing the news, Carlos Silva made a strong case to remain in the rotation. Silva pitched 6 innings allowing only 2 runs (2 run homer to Todd Helton in the 6th) striking out 4 while walking only 1. The bullpen did the rest as Esmailin Caridad, James Russell, Sean Marshall, and Carlos Zambrano combined for 3 shutout innnings to secure the sweep.

The Cubs put up 6 runs on offense (which included multiple “hit and runs”). Kosuke Fukudome (1), Starlin Castro (2), Tyler Colvin (1) and Ryan Theriot (2) all had RBIs in the win. Unfortunately, Derrek Lee had a rough day at the plate going 1-5 with 3 strikeouts.

The Cubs aren’t going to win many games with their 3-4 (Lee & Aramis Ramirez) hitters hitting .229 and .171 respectfully.

The Cubs will head to Philidelphia to take on the Phillies in another 2 game set. Tom Gorzelanny (1-4) will have a chance to state his case to stay in the rotation vs. Jamie Moyer (5-2).
