The Chicago Cubs have made a ton of moves on the trade market this season with their biggest accusations coming with them acquiring superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros. Going into his first season with the Chicago Cubs and looking to come back healthy after missing most of last season with a shin contusion, could Kyle Tucker win the National Leagues MVP this season and be a nightmare in the National League Central.
Is Kyle Tucker primed to go off this season?
Adding the 3x All-Star to an already potent lineup was essential for the Cubs to do this season being they lacked a superstar. For Kyle Tucker’s career he is a career .274/.353/.515 hitter with an OPS and OPS+ of .870 and 139.
Last year Tucker was limited to just 78 games, in those 78 games however, Kyle Tucker did produce numbers that could’ve land him in the top 10 for the MVP voting. In 2024 Kyle Tucker had 80 hits, 13 doubles, 23 HRs, 49 RBI, 11 stolen bases, with a slash line of .289/.408/.585 for an OPS and OPS+ of .993 181.
To date the 6”4’ Tucker’s best seasons came in both 2021 and 2023 where he finished in the top twenty and top five for the MVP vote. Tucker in 2021 hit .294/.359/.557 for an OPS and OPS+ of .917 and 147. Looking at his Baseball Savant page for 2021 it’s shocking he didn’t finish higher in the vote. Finishing in the 99th percentile for landing the sweet spot in the ball, the 94th for his batting run value, and the 92nd percentile for his base running value.
What will 2025 bring for Kyle Tucker?
The Chicago Cubs will need Kyle Tucker to have a MVP like season in order to make the playoffs this season. If he can have the numbers he had in both 2021 and 2023 and bring it over to the Chicago Cubs there’s no doubt Kyle Tucker could take home this year’s National League Most Value Player award.
Entering the last year of his deal before hitting free agency it will be imperative for the Chicago Cubs to ink Kyle Tucker to an extension before the season begin. They need to keep Kyle Tucker around to use as a building block to shape the roster into a potential juggernaut in the National League.
