On Friday night, the Chicago Bears will be in New York to take on the Giants in their second preseason game of 2019. It will be interesting to see how long the starters play if at all given head coach Matt Nagy’s view on starter playing in the preseason.

Backups and rookies could see a majority of the playing time, especially those who impressed against Carolina last week. Here are three Chicago Bears to watch for against the New York Giants:

Safety Deon Bush

The lone interception against the Carolina Panthers last week was made by safety Deon Bush. The interception was impressive as he jumped a crossing route diagnosing the play.

Last season, Bush started and played well in the final two games when All-Pro Eddie Jackson suffered an ankle injury. Bush playing well is important because he will be the first safety up if either Jackson or new safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix go down with an injury during the season.

Health is going to be the biggest factor on whether or not the Bears defense performs well, but injuries are less costly with quality depth. Both projected Bears safeties have a history with injuries and Bush’s ability to be counted on could be beneficial during the season.

Wide Receiver Javon Wims

With the ankle injury to wide receiver Anthony Miller, second-year wide receiver Javon Wims could see an increased role in the offense. Wims was the most productive and surprising offensive rookie last preseason recording a 100 yard receiving game against the Kansas City Chiefs. In his only game in the season finale, Wims caught four passes for 36 yards against Minnesota.

It will be interesting how the Bears let Wims play on Friday night and how lines up in the offense also.

He is capable of playing from both the slot and on the outside being able to catch both short and long passes. With another strong preseason, Wims could make a role for himself once the regular season begins with the offense.

Running back Kerrith Whyte Jr.

Rookie running back David Montgomery was impressive in his NFL debut against the Panthers, but he wasn’t the only other rookie running back that had a big game. Seventh-round running back Kerrith Whyte had a big game also including a 23-yard run. Whyte also active in the passing game and has a similar playing style to Tarik Cohen.

He is expected to be the team’s fourth running back this season and could play a role on both offense and special teams. With Montgomery likely to see less playing time against the Giants, Whyte could be the benefactor. With the possible extended playing time, it will be interesting to watch how Matt Nagy utilizes his seventh-round rookie in the offense Friday night.
