Training Camp: Kevin White has shin splints

We finally know what is going on with Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White.

After practice on Wednesday, head coach John Fox addressed the media and provided an update on the rookie wide receiver. Fox told the media that White had shin splints as ESPN writes:

“He’s a got shin. You can call it splints, call it whatever you want,” Fox said. “You see him out here. It’s not like we’re covering up some awful injury where he’s in a cast, a boot and crutches.”

Fox downplayed the incident and said that White suffered the injury during the team’s mandatory OTA’s in June. The wide receiver was reportedly expected to be ready come training camp, but has missed the first week of practice.

The Bears are taking caution with White’s injury and not rushing him back. However, White himself has lobbied to return to the practice field as soon as possible.

Adam Jahns of the Sun Times reported:

“He’s [champing] at the bit,” Fox said. “He’s mad at me right now because I won’t let him practice, but we’re going to be smart. He is going to be a viable part of our football team. He’s doing things with the trainers, and we’re going to ramp it up as we go. I can’t predict the future. But it’s what it is. It flared up. We’re trying to get it to settle down, and we’ll see where it goes.”

The problem with shin splints is that it can cause permanent damage and would likely put a big damper on the first-round picks rookie season. Taking the cautionary measure is the safe route.

White did receive some advice from former Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher who was at practice on Wednesday. The two were caught chatting on the sidelines.
