Today marks the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
Thousands filled up Ground Zero in Manhattan on Monday morning to commemorate the event and the ones we lost on that tragic day.
Going back to 2001, the day shocked everyone including pro sports. Major League Baseball postponed games for a week as the nation looked to recover.
But when it returned, Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa made sure he saluted this country the first chance he could.
The Cubs returned to action on Sept. 18 when they traveled to Cincinnati for a road series. They returned home to take on the Houston Astros days later and Sosa put a unique twist to his pregame ritual of sprinting to his position in right field:
On Sept. 27 Sosa did something that Cubs fans will remember forever.
Sosa hit a home run to the right field bleachers and as he was rounding first he received a flag from first base coach Billy Williams. The slugger then rounded the bases holding a small American flag.

The home run was the 59th for Sosa and he’d go on to hit 64 on the season, the second-most in his career.
In an interview with Carrie Muskat in 2011, Williams says he still has that flag to this day.
