The Chicago White Sox finally made the move to trade ace Chris Sale in 2016 when they shipped him to Boston for a haul of prospects.
The package was headlined by infielder Yoan Moncada and also included pitcher Michael Kopech. But the White Sox almost got one of Boston’s most prized players, Andrew Benintendi.
Benintendi explains to Mass Live what exactly was going on in the hours the deal was happening:
“My agent texted me and said, ‘You’re either going to go or not in the next two minutes,’” Benintendi said via Mass Live. “So I was just like, ‘OK, there’s not much I can do. So after that two minutes went up, I saw everything on Twitter and people were texting me. It was a big move for both sides.”
The White Sox asked for booth Benintendi and Mookie Betts in July as the two teams tried to get a deal done at the deadline. It never happened.
In the end, it was Moncada being the big get in the package. The 22-year-old Benintendi was ranked as the best prospect in baseball for 2017 according to Baseball America.
But Moncada wasn’t far behind. Moncada was ranked No. 2 on the list and is expected to be called up at some point in the 2017 season.
The Red Sox are ready to win now and have a legit shot with a solid rotation and an abundance of young talent. The White Sox on the other hand are rebuilding and added two solid prospects that can help them build for the future.
