With the third pick in the 2019 MLB Amateur Draft on Monday night, the Chicago White Sox selected first baseman Andrew Vaughn from Cal University. Vaughn is considered by some to be the best hitting talent available in this year’s draft. He gives the White Sox another potential high-level power bat in their organization and could be Jose Abreu’s replacement in a few years.
Vaughn hit 50 home runs and drove in 162 RBIs in three seasons at Cal. His career high in home runs came last season when he hit 23 home run, drove in 63, and batted .402. This past season he showed his plate discipline as he drew 53 walks in just 48 games.
Vaughn won the 2018 Golden Spikes award which is given to the best collegiate baseball player. Although his defense may be a concern, there is no doubt that he has tremendous offensive upside. Many MLB insiders have compared him to Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and to Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant.
The selection of a first baseman provides the team with added depth at the first base position as Abreu will be a free agent following this season. Gavin Sheets, Zack Collins, and possibly Jake Burger are the only significant power hitting prospects that the team has in the minors.
