2019 NBA Draft: Coby White should be on Chicago Bulls radar at No. 7

Tuesday evening the Chicago Bulls franchise got the short end of the stick during the NBA Draft Lottery when they were informed they would be drafting at the number seven overall spot in the 2019 NBA draft.

Based on the lottery percentages, the Bulls were expected to have the number four overall pick and it was believed they would be targeting Point Guard Darius Garland from Vanderbilt University. However, now that the Bulls have the number seven pick many NBA insiders believe that the Bulls will look to select point guard Coby White from the University of North Carolina.

Getting the number seven pick might turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Most mock drafts have the suns taking the injured Darius Garland with the number six pick which would leave the Bulls with a pretty easy decision at number seven and healthy player to start at point guard.

The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 16.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and shot 42.2 percent from the field while starting all but one game for the Tar Heels as a freshman. Throughout the season White proved he can run the floor and play big in big-time games against the toughest competition in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

To close out the regular season against Duke, White scored 21 points with three assists, three blocks, and zero turnovers in 36 minutes on the floor and did so going up against one of the top defending point guards in Tre Jones.

Although White may not have the same jaw-dropping assist numbers of Murray State’s Ja Morant, his skill set is impressive. The first thing you notice about White from his highlights is his speed and quickness up the floor. White gets the ball from end to end rapidly and shows the ability to slice through a defense while doing so, forcing defenses to collapse on him as he penetrates and creating open space for his teammates on the wing or at the baseline.

Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams called white, “The best scoring point guard I’ve coached.” With that said, White could still use some improvement in his three point shooting and needs become a more impactful Passer but that shouldn’t be a problem with the scoring talent the Bulls will have around him.

If the Bulls do draft White, it should allow them to play the more modern type of NBA game, meaning a faster pace up the floor and more possessions. Adding a point guard with the speed and handling that White has should create a lot of space for Zach LaVine, Laurie Markkanen, and Otto Porter Jr. to operate and score.

Finally if White becomes a Bull, it likely means the end of the Kris Dunn experiment at point guard but it’s still unclear what the Bulls would do with his contract.
