Bears Open Up Day One of Minicamp

The Chicago Bears opened up their 2010 mini camp early this morning at Halas Hall. The first practice started around 8:30, followed by meetings, and then a final practice to close the day later on.

This is the first time the Bears have done two-a-days at mini camp since Lovie Smiths second season with the team.

Some notable non-participants included Brandon Manumaleuna, Olin Kreutz and  Brad Maynard.

Manumaleuna had off-season knee surgery, but will be ready for training camp.

We also found out that wide receiver Earl Bennett underwent knee surgery as well, but practiced today on a limited basis.

Receivers coach Darryl Drake sent a early message to the young receiving core, telling them “Don’t you let that ball ever hit the ground”

The receivers will have big roles this season with the Bears, and need to contribute more than last season.

The Bears used a variety of receivers in first team drills with Cutler. Including, Devin Aromashodu, Devin Hester, Earl Bennett and Johnny Knox.

Brian Urlacher looked strong in the first 7 on 7 in minicamp, picking off Jay Cutler once. Cutler almost was picked again, but safety Chris Harris dropped it.

Other than that, Cutler and the Bears offense looked good. Mike Martz’s system looks like it’s fitting in well with the players.

With the Bears holding two practices, Tommie Harris and Pisa Tinoisamoa will both only practice once per day.
