The Chicago Bears have added a new element to their offense by signing running back Jacquizz Rodgers this afternoon.
Rodgers was most recently a member of the Atlanta Falcons where he was used in a number of ways, including running back, slot receiver and kick returner.
At 5-foot-6, 200-pounds he brings a different style that the Bears are not accustomed to. He is strong between the tackles, has a burst and fights hard for yards after the initial hit. While he can get caught up behind the line at times, he also has escapability, and can more than hold his own as a blocker. Rodgers is also an extremely effective receiver. He’s a strong route runner, has solid hands and is a threat after the catch.
He joins the backfield of Matt Forte, Ka’Deem Carey and Senorise Perry. The team is still in evaluation mode, and have not taken the practice field yet, but Rodgers gives offensive coordinator Adam Gase another weapon to work with, both out of the backfield and from the slot. He also becomes another option in the return game.
While the Bears could add a running back in the middle rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft, more competition will only help with depth and schematic options.
