Zacch Pickens, DL
Defensive lineman Zacch Pickens was the Chicago Bears’ third round pick in 2023. It was the same draft they selected Gervon Dexter. The Bears felt that both Pickens and Dexter could become integral to the defense. While Dexter has been impressing many, Pickens has not been able to do the same.
Pickens was the backup defensive tackle to start the 2024 season. However, when Andrew Billings’ season was cut short due to an injury, Pickens had an opportunity to step up as a starter.
Pickings was not able to get on the field before Billings’ injury. He was inactive in six of the first seven games of the season. In the final nine games after Billings went down, he played in seven of them (and was inactive in the final two games) and registered just 18 tackles (one for loss), one sack, and two quarterback hits.
The Chicago Bears added some players on the interior of the defensive line this offseason. One of them was defensive tackle Grady Jarrett via free agency. Another was rookie Shemar Turner, drafted in the second round. Now Pickens has his work cut out for him to make the roster.
Pickens is listed as the third string tackle, behind even Turner. He has little room for error if he wants to make the final cut. If he comes out slow out of the gate he could be looking for a job with another team.
