Theo Epstein joined the Chicago Cubs in 2011, agreeing to a 5-year-contract with the ball club. Now, he will be here at least another five more.

The Cubs have reached a deal to extend Epstein’s contract as President of Baseball Operations for another five years in excess of $50 million.

Breaking – Theo Epstein has signed a new five year deal

Here’s what owner Tom Ricketts said in a statement:

“In the five years under Theo’s leadership, he has brought in a strong executive team and acquired and developed some of the best players in the game. Now, the results are on the field. My family and I have no doubt that we have moved closer to our goal of delivering Cubs fans the World Series championship they deserve.”

Epstein’s deal also surpasses Los Angeles Dodgers’ Andrew Friedman who is earning $8 million annually. In addition to Epstein, the Cubs also extended the contracts of Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod.

Since arriving in Chicago, Epstein has turned the Cubs into one of the best teams in baseball. He’s traded for players like Anthony Rizzo, Addison Russell, Jake Arrieta, Dexter Fowler, Kyle Hendricks, Aroldis Chapman and Pedro Strop. The Front Office also used the draft to land talents such as Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber and Albert Almora.

Then there’s free agency.

Chicago has acquired Jon Lester, Jason Heyward, John Lackey and Ben Zobrist through the free agent market, setting their team up win win now.

The Cubs currently sit at 101 wins with just five more games to go. It’s the first time they’ve reached the 100 win mark since 1945.

There are plenty of bright seasons ahead for the Chicago Cubs in the future.
