The Chicago Cubs used the long ball to defeat the Pirates 11-6 for their third win in a row.
In a six-homer, 21-hit attack, the Cubs gave a iuge cushion to starter Randy Wells. The Cubs put up one run in the first on Aramis Ramirez’s RBI single. Tyler Colvin’s 450-foot home run cleared the back wall of PNC Park and bounced into the river in the second inning to tie the game 2-2. It was Colvin’s first home run since April 12. Ramirez hit a three-run homer to center later in the inning to give the Cubs a 5-2 lead. The Cubs knocked out Pirates starter Kevin Correia in the third inning with two more home runs coming back to back by Geovany Soto and Alfonso Soriano. Marlon Byrd added a home run later in the game and then Soriano hit his second home runs of the night. Wells won his third game of the season and second in three starts, striking out a season-high seven in six innings.
It appears that Soriano is now in the midst of his hot streak. He now has four home runs in four games. Even though his average is stuck at .244, his power has come back to him.
Other Notes: The Cubs have their second three-game win streak of the season. They hit six home runs in a game for the first time since Sept. 17, 2006 against the Cincinnati Reds . Soriano went deep twice in a game for the 28th time in his career.
The Cubs will look for their first four game winning streak of the year Wednesday. Matt Garza (4-8 3.99) opposes Pittsburgh’s Charlie Morton (8-6, 4.04).
