Carlos Marmol’s Cubs career may be over.

It doesn’t even come close to the Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup, but the most hated Cub on the team was designated for assignment today, something many fans thought was long overdue. Carlos Marmol, who had a 5.86 ERA and lost his closer’s role very early in the season to Kevin Gregg, just couldn’t seem to cut it this year, no matter what role he was in. All this coming after he had struggled to close out games to previous two seasons. In being DFA’d, the Cubs have three options with Marmol in the ten days he is on waivers. They can either trade him, which seems very unlikely, release him, which won’t happen with his bloated contract, or send him down after the ten days. At the moment, this seems like the most likely option, and maybe working on his mechanics in Iowa can work out for the better for him. However, it seems that Marmol’s Cubs career is over. The management has realized he has no more trade value and he has no worth to the team.

Someone else whose Cubs career is over is Ian Stewart. The third baseman spent all of this season in Triple A, where he struggled to find a groove at the plate. He just finished a 10 day suspension for his twitter antics. Stewart was released, and the Cubs will have to pay him the $1 million on his contract that they signed him to in December.

The final move that they made today was calling up right fielder Brian Bogusevic from Triple-A. Bogusevic was tearing up the Pacific Coast League hitting .319 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI. The Illinois native was previously in the majors with the Astros from 2010-2012.
