After failing to make a trade before the July 31 trade deadline, the Chicago Cubs have now dealt veteran outfielder, David DeJesus to the Washington Nationals for a player to be named.

The Nationals had recently put in a claim for DeJesus and just arrived in Chicago for a four game series this week. The two sides were able to reach an agreement on a trade this morning and DeJesus will be playing at Wrigley tonight, but for Washington. It is still unclear who could be the player to be named but the deal helps the Cubs as it saves them $2.5 million. David was owed $1 million in salary and a $1.5 million buyout this upcoming season. Brian Bogusevic has been activated from the 15-day disabled list, in response to the trade.

A lot of people around baseball anticipated to Cubs to deal DeJesus so the deal can’t come to fans as a surprise. Although the trade does save the Cubs some money, they will certainly miss their center fielder. He certainly handled himself like a pro in every situation and was a mentor to the young guys, especially Anthony Rizzo.

In 232 games with the Cubs over the past two years, DeJesus hit .258 with a .343 on-base percentage to go along with 47 doubles, 11 triples, and 15 home runs. Despite a low average, Dejesus was a great leadoff guy due to his patience at the plate and a walk percentage of 10.

Bogusevic will be the temporary replacement in centerfield and possibly the lead off spot. However, Junior Lake will start in center and lead offon Monday night. McDonald will take over left.
