With the 2019 MLB Playoffs continue on, the Chicago Cubs are in search of a new manager for the 2020 season after failing to make the playoffs for the first time in five season. The Cubs and Joe Maddon mutually agreed to part ways following a disappointing 84-78 record leading to a third-place finish in the NL Central.
During his post-season press conference, Theo Epstein brought up a few names as candidates for the new manager job and now the Cubs are moving forward with interviews.
At the top of the list are Joe Girardi and David Ross, both who will interview this week for the job. Girardi was in Chicago on Wednesday night and according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun Times, the two sides met for eight hours:
Ross is a former player who was on that 2016 World Series title team that ended a 108-year drought. He appears to be the favorite to land the job and will interview for the position on Thursday afternoon.
Wittenmyer is also reporting that Astros bench coach Joe Espada and Yankees special assistant Carlos Beltran are candidates that could get interviews as well. The Cubs have already interviewed bench coach Mark Loretta on Monday and first-base coach Will Venable last week.
