Cubs 9, Diamondbacks 4

Phoenix — It wasn’t a pretty performance, but a combined 6 Cubs pitchers held the D-Backs at bay while the offense helped the Cubs cruise to a series opening win in Arizona. Kosuke Fukodome led off the game with his seventh long ball of the season and Alfonso Soriano added a pinch-hit two run shot in the 9th, his 14th.

This was the first series opener the Cubs had won since the Dodgers came to Chicago on May 25th, 11 series ago.

Ian Kennedy (3-7) bounced back into the strike zone after allowing a franchise record nine walks his last time out. Kennedy went 5 2/3 with no free passes, but was tagged for seven runs on nine hits. Tom Gorzelanny (3-5) was erratic walking six over five innings, but worked out of the worst jams with minimal damage.

Geovany Soto added three hits and a pair of RBI on two doubles. Starlin Castro also drove in two on a triple. Kelly Johnson knocked in two in a losing effort for Arizona.

Been following Chicago sports for many years. I have ties to Rockford, Illinois however have since been displaced in North Carolina far from Illinois. I am still an avid fan despite the geographical complications in following my teams. I am known as the internet’s #1 Rex Grossman connoisseur
