The Chicago Bears will not lose one of their most significant free agents: Special teams coordinator Dave Toub received a two-year contract Tuesday that will keep him in place through 2013.
Toub, who interviewed to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, was informed he is no longer in the running for that job. The Dolphins are expected to bring candidates in for a second interview.
An original member of Lovie Smith’s coaching staff from 2004, Toub consistently has had the Bears among the top-ranked special teams units in the league. They finished third this past season in comprehensive special teams rankings, and they have placed in the top six in five of the last six seasons.
Special teams ace Corey Graham was selected to thePro Bowl this season, becoming the eighth player to go to the Pro Bowl under Toub. The Bears have led the NFL in return touchdowns and blocked kicks since Toub arrived. Robbie Gould is the fifth-most accurate kicker in NFL history and new punter Adam Podelsh became the first Bear to have a net average of more than 40 yards in 2011.
The contract makes Toub one of the highest-paid special teams coordinators in the NFL, just a notch below Brad Seely in San Francisco, who earns $1 million annually. Toub was a coaching free agent and the fact he’s returning to the Bears without shopping his services around the league shows he was committed to being a part of Smith’s staff moving forward.
