The Fire announced on Monday that they had waived backup goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi and would not exercise their option on designated player Egidio Arevalo Rios.
Tornaghi had served as the backup to starting goalkeeper Sean Johnson, seeing much time while Johnson was away from the team for national team duty, including Olympic qualifying matches in 2012 that saw the United States eliminated before the main tournament.
Tornaghi compiled a 3-4-2 record in the net and recorded one shutout since being signed in March of 2012.
Tornaghi will be placed into the MLS Waiver Draft set to take place on Monday, where he will be eligible to be claimed by a new club.
Rios, a defensive midfielder, was signed as a designated player in August, and while he certainly made a presence known on the field, he did not have the large-scale impact that the club was perhaps hoping for, as the Fire fell short of the post-season for the third time in four seasons. The move frees up a designated player slot heading into what should be a big off-season for the team recently ranked as the both league’s eighth most valuable club and fourth least profitable club by Forbes. The Fire’s other current designated player is striker Juan Luis Anangono.
