The Chicago Fire signed Uruguayan forward Federico Puppo Wednesday to a deal of undisclosed terms, per league and club policy. The signing is the Fire’s second move in the last three days, after the club signed midfielder Rafael Robayo on Monday.
Puppo had previously played for Danubio F.C. in the Uruguayan Primera Division in 2011, playing in just 10 matches, yet still scoring two goals. Prior to playing for Danubio, Puppo played for Club Atletico River Plate, where he scored 17 goals in 57 games. Puppo also played for the Montevideo Wanderers to start his career from 2004-2006, before transfering to River Plate.
Chicago-Fire.com cited Fire Coach Frank Klopas commenting on the signing, “Federico Puppo is a player we’ve kept an eye for the past few seasons. He is a smart forward who moves well off the ball and finishes in front of the goal. His addition helps us to strengthen our attacking core. We are excited to get all of these guys into camp and begin putting in the work on the field.”
Chicago-Fire.com also says that Puppo scored a game-winning goal for Uruguay against Ecuador in the 2011 Pan-American Games, a competition of many sports that also featured Cubs prospect Brett Jackson playing for Team U.S.A.’s baseball team.
