Home Sweet Home?

The Chicago White Sox finished up a 10-game homestand Sunday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field on Chicago’s South side. The weekend series saw cold weather, rain delays and dreadful pitching by the Sox and a sweep at the bats of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Mother Nature had it in for the Southsiders over the past couple days as the Sox couldn’t come up with any answers for the Angels or the weather.

The pitching woes continued for Chicago over the weekend, but this time it was the starters who had troubles. Youngster Phil Humber struggled on Friday surrendering four runs through the first five innings before a rain delay washed him to the clubhouse. Gavin Floyd had control issues from the opening pitch on Saturday afternoon after a 2:15 rain delay and never got on track as he threw five wild pitches, giving up six runs in six innings. Buehrle took the mound Sunday attempting to prevent the sweep but to no avail as the Angels scored four times, which was enough to secure the victory and the series sweep.

The Angels sent Jered Weaver, rookie Tyler Chatwood and veteran Dan Haren to the mound for the 3-game set. When you see Weaver and Haren, you don’t expect to score many runs as expected, but Chatwood ended up being the toughest pitcher all weekend. The Sox continued their trend of making rookie pitchers look like Cy Young as Chatwood stifled the Sox offense on Saturday. Weaver pitched another good outing through five on Friday, but surrenedered a two-run homer at the bat of Adam Dunn to close the Angels lead to 4-3 before the bullpen shut the door on the Sox. Haren had a similar outing on Sunday as he allowed only two runs before the bullpen came in to seal the deal for LA. The Sox had chances on Friday and Sunday, but couldn’t deliver.

After a disappointing 4-6 homestand for the White Sox, they now head on the road for the next 11 games, making stops in Tampa, Detroit and New York. The road certainly doesn’t get any easier for Chicago. After dropping games at home to teams they’re expected to beat, going on the road to face division rival Detroit and AL East contender and perennial World Series contender New York is not what they want to see on their schedule. Home is not too sweet for the Sox so far. Let’s hope they can become road warriors until they get their groove on the South side.
