Interview with BrewersCubs.Com

Check out this CCS interview with the administrator of BrewersCubs.Com. They have an interesting community over there. What happens when you mix two teams with fan bases who absolutely hate each other? Well…you get this site. We found some time to catch up with the admin of the site jpat.

1.) Can you explain to us what exactly your website encompasses, what is your goal?

BrewersCubs.com is more of an online community than a website. You won’t find articles or news like you would on other sites. 99% of the content on the site is in the forum. We used to run the community over at Proboards, but as we grew and found the desire for the potential to do more, we moved over to our own website and created what you see today. Our goal is simple: to have a place to talk to other intelligent Brewers/Cubs fans about our beloved teams. Several of our members are no longer living in the Milwaukee or Chicago area. It isn’t easy to find a lot of Brewer fans to talk Brewers baseball if you live in the state of Washington.

2.) When did you start the site up?

Spring 2008. I can’t believe we’re in our third season already.

3.) When trying to unify two rival fan bases, what problems have you encountered? Has it been rough keeping the peace?

It has been a surprisingly smooth process. There have admittedly been a couple of minor problems due to the difference in allegiances, but for the most part, it has been a non-issue.

4.) Where did you get the idea to start a website dedicated to the rivalry between the Cubs and Brewers?

Our roots come from the message boards at ESPN. ESPN’s boards are essentially unmoderated. I’m not an active member with any other online communities, but the trolls for the Brewers and Cubs boards at ESPN are absolutely ridiculous, making it nearly impossible to discuss intelligent baseball over there. There were two main draws I used to get people to migrate over to a new community.

A) We would be a highly unfiltered and unmoderated forum. As baseball fans, most of us do a fair amount of cussing…this would be allowed, and even encouraged.
B) The only moderating would be of the “trollish” posting, similar to that of the ESPN boards.

5.) What team or fan base is in the majority?

Although biased, I believe the trolls were worse…certainly more persistent. As a result, we actually have more regular posters on the Brewers side of the site. We have some really good people on both sides though.

6.) Do you have any important or big upcoming plans for the site in the near future?

We have a couple of contests running on the site. A couple of members are digging into their own pockets and are planning on giving away game tickets and gift cards as prizes. A big thanks goes out to those members.

We also have an affiliate t-shirt site; The Shirt Alert – Humor Shirts | Funny Shirts Sayings | Graphic Funny Tees. The owner of that site is a friend of mine from college. He has several humorous t-shirts on his site and can make high quality, custom t-shirts to suit your needs.

7.) Where do you draw your allegiance for teams?

I’m a Brewers fan, living in the north suburbs of Chicago. This is the main reason I even started looking at forums in the first place. It’s very difficult to find a Brewers fan to talk to about baseball when you’re living in the enemy’s backyard. As a result of this community, I have definitely gotten to be a more knowledgeable fan about the Brewers, Cubs and baseball in general. That’s the best part!

8.) We’ve discussed the site, tell us about you.

As stated above, I’m an engineer in my mid-20’s working in the north suburbs of Chicago with my roots coming from southern Wisconsin (Madison and Milwaukee). This site has been a lot of fun to be a part of. Not only do we have some great discussion regarding both of these teams in the best sport on the planet, we have another section of the board (RS; you will have to visit to find out what that stands for) that makes this site a must-visit on a daily basis, year round. It’s a community that is a little more tight-knit than most and we are proud of that.

Thanks to chicitysports.com for the chance to participate in this interview. -jpat
