After beating the Cardinals on April 13th, the Chicago Cubs have lost 6 straight games. Yesterday, the Cubs beat the Reds 6-1 to end their 6-game skid. Today they go for their first series win of the season, playing the Reds at 1:10 on WGN.
Their win yesterday started off a bit shaky with Paul Maholm starting and giving up a double, walk, and single in the 1st. However, he battled and struck out the last two of the inning. The Cubs answered back with 1 run in the 1st and 4 runs in the 2nd. The Cubs scored another run in the 7th and beat the Reds 6-1. This lead to Maholm’s first win of the season.
Following the game, the Cubs traded struggling center fielder, Marlon Byrd, to the Boston Red Sox for relief pitcher Michael Bowden and a player to be named later. Byrd is batting .070 with 0 home runs and only 2 RBI. He will go to Boston to compete for the AL East.
Michael Bowden, from Winfield IL, has pitched 3 innings in 2 games this year. He’s given up 2 hits, with 1 of those being a home run. He has also walked 1 batter this season and struck out 3.
In other news, Ryan Dempster has joined Kerry Wood on the DL. Wood was put on the disabled list with right shoulder fatigue. Dempster has been placed on the DL with a strained right quadriceps.
The Cubs have called up speedy center fielder Tony Campana and following the trade of Byrd, they have called up starting pitcher Randy Wells. Wells has started 3 games in AAA Iowa and has a record of 1-0 with a 9.42 ERA. Today, Wells will make his first MLB start of the season opposing Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto.
