On Sunday, Bob Nightengale reported that the Chicago Cubs were one of several teams monitoring the trade market for Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon. The Cubs would use McMahon, a 2024 All-Star, to fill the hole they have at third base.
The Cubs’ issues at third base have been well-documented this season. Rookie Matt Shaw started the season at third base, but his struggles at the plate forced Chicago to send him down to Triple-A. Gage Workman was DFA’d in April.
Jon Berti and Vidal Brujan have left plenty to be desired at the plate and with fielding. With Shaw’s bat getting hot in Iowa, Cubs fans were hoping for the promising young rookie to get another chance in the majors.
Chicago Cubs confirmed Matt Shaw news

Per Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters on Sunday that the team is considering calling up Shaw for their series against the Miami Marlins beginning on Monday.
“Counsell confirms Matt Shaw “under consideration” to be called up for Miami series,” Sullivan posted on X.

Shaw has issues to overcome at the plate in the majors

The Cubs are traveling to Miami for the three-game series. Game 1 is set to begin Monday at 5:40 p.m. CST.
Chicago enters the series on a three-game win streak after completing a sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 6-2 win on Sunday in front of 40,152 fans at Wrigley Field.
If Shaw gets the call, he must prove he’s developed his skills at the plate. He managed just 10 hits in 58 at-bats through 18 game appearances. He was batting .172/.294/.241 with an OPS of .535 with one home run and three RBI before Chicago sent him down to Iowa.
The Cubs appear ready to give Shaw another chance before they decide to pull off a trade for veteran help.
