The Chicago Red Stars looked to be in a good position for a playoff berth just weeks ago, but were officially eliminated Sunday when the defending champion Portland Thorns FC defeated Seattle Reign FC in the regular season finale.
The Red Stars and fourth place Washington Spirit (the Thorns finished third) finished dead even at 35 points in 24 games in the National Women’s Soccer League’s second season of play.
Due in large part to a double-header with the Chicago Fire men’s team at Toyota Park to open the season, the Red Stars did have a successful season at the gate despite the bad on-field end to their season.
It will be interesting to see where the Red Stars play next season, as the team currently plays at Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex in Lisle, Illinois where the team struggles to draw fans from the city due to distance and transportation issues. The team has expressed a desire for further future collaboration with the Fire, though a move to Toyota Park would see unlikely.
