Just a day before the 2015 NFL Draft kicks off in Chicago, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted an interesting tidbit about a situation that could develop. Schefter is reporting that the Bears are entertaining trade options for tight end Martellus Bennett.
The 28-year-old tight end had 90 receptions for 916 yards and 6 touchdowns last season for the Bears, all career-highs for Bennett who spent time with the Cowboys and Giants previously. Bennett is entering the third year of a four year deal he signed in 2013 which was $20.4 million guaranteed in the deal. He will earn $4.9 million of his base salary this season.
The report comes after Bennett has missed both voluntary workout sessions for the Bears. The latest is this week as the team held a voluntary minicamp due to the new hire of head coach John Fox. Bennett joins Matt Forte as the only Bears missing the voluntary workouts.
Sources also told Adam Schefter that the Bears and Seattle Seahawks were in talks regarding the Pro Bowl tight end this offseason, but the Seahawks landed Jimmy Graham in a trade with the New Orelans Saints. Bennett’s brother, Michael, plays for the Saints and also has missed voluntary workouts.
Bennett is looking for a new contract extension, whether it will be with the Bears or a new team. If a team does indeed trade for Bennett they would likely want to sign him to an extension as he only has two years left on a deal. The Bears could trade Bennett for draft picks this weekend and if they do it would increase their chances of selecting a wide receiver or a tight end.
