With most of the rumors surrounding the Chicago Cubs and the MLB Trade Deadline coming in the form of Manny Machado, we’ve also heard some about the team pursuing another starter. We don’t know how aggressive Theo Epstein will be come the end of July and if he will try to sell the farm again and land Machado or if he trusts starters Yu Darvish, Jose Quintana and Kyle Hendricks to get back on track.
But on Monday, a new rumor circulated and it involved one of Machado’s teammates in Baltimore.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Cubs are looking to add a veteran to the clubhouse and have inquired about two outfielders. Rosenthal mentions that the Cubs have discussed trading for Baltimore’s Adam Jones and Toronto’s Curtis Granderson.
The report mentions both Jones and Granderson as targets for the Cubs and that the team has had discussions with other clubs as well. It also states that it’s unlikely they will land either.
The Cubs already have a lot of depth in the outfield with Albert Almora Jr., Ian Happ, Kyle Schwarber, Jason Heyward and even Ben Zobrist out there at times, so adding another player to the mix would create more of a log jam.
Jones is hitting .280/.305/.429 with 10 home runs on the season and is a five-time All-Star in his 11-year career with the Orioles. Granderson has bounced around a to a few teams in his career and is currently hitting .246 with nine home runs and 28 RBI’s this year for Toronto.
Chicago entered play on Tuesday at 51-37 and 1.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.
