Reports imply Justin Fields had a rough practice at Wednesday’s OTA

Justin Fields will need to clean up some of his throws

Reports from multiple sources coming from Wednesday’s OTA for the Chicago Bears seemed to suggest Justin Fields struggled. Fields has a lot of weight carrying on his shoulders for the Chicago Bears this season. He will be asked to improve in an offense that lacks elite talent.

The second-year quarterback appeared to force things Wednesday. The offense surrounding Fields didn’t seem to help alleviate the pressure. The good news was that at least the secondary looked good.

Did not see Bears CB Kyler Gordon at practice today. Robert Quinn was also absent.

Jaylon Johnson was back running with the 1s. He had an impressive pass breakup.

DeAndre Houston-Carson had a pair of interceptions.

DeAndre Houston-Carson had an INT during two-min drill on a tipped pass. Justin Fields' pass went off the hands of Equanimeous St. Brown.

Moments before, a false start on LT Braxton Jones had sent the offense backwards on first-and-10 at the 40.

Bears just wrapped Wednesday's OTA practice. Felt like the defense came away on top today. Couple pass break ups (Jaylon Johnson, near INT by CJ Avery) and a pick by DeAndre Houston-Carson of note. Did not spot rookie Kyler Gordon at practice. Still no Robert Quinn.

Eberflus said the offense had a terrific day on Monday and said he counted 11 chunk pass plays. He says the defense responded with a good day today. This observer didn't see many chunk plays for the offense today.

Yikes… But good deal for Safety DeAndre Houston-Carson.

The Bears’ offense will need Justin Fields to be consistently better

There’s no way to sugarcoat it, the Bears’ offense appears to be a mess you’d see after waking up from your first house party hungover. This isn’t the first report at an offseason practice that suggested the Bears’ offense looked atrocious. Fields and the offense are going to have to show signs of getting in sync soon or there’s going to be a lot more panic coming this season. Hopefully, this young, inexperienced coaching staff isn’t overwhelmed.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said in his press conference that the offense played better Monday. “We thought as a staff, and the players would attest to this, that it was our best practice,” he said. “The offense had an outstanding day on Monday. I think I counted 11-chunk passes and 1-chunk run.” The ebb and flow between the Bears’ defense looking strong while the offense struggles, and vice versa, will happen on gameday, Eberflus said.

That’s all well and good to tell the media about good things coming from an under-equipped unit at a closed practice. But the results will be seen soon enough. The Bears’ offense needs to look consistent, even as they play musical chairs with the roster. Chunk plays should still be happening at practices where they have a few bad plays. Right now, every indication is showing that the Bears are going to have a hard time moving the ball downfield in 2022.
