Local and national media continue to elongate the pre-2024 draft drama between the Chicago Bears and Caleb Williams after the second-year quarterback didn’t address ESPN reporter Seth Wickersham’s story from last week.
While Williams had his reservations about joining the Bears, he ultimately concluded that he wanted to turn around the quarterback fortunes of Chicago.
Williams’ rookie season didn’t go as planned. Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and head coach Matt Eberflus didn’t last through December. Williams finished with 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also took a league-high 68 sacks.
Caleb Williams predicted to find a new home after his rookie contract

During an appearance on 670 The Score’s “Mully & Haugh” show Friday morning, former NFL offensive lineman Ross Tucker argued that it’s more likely than not Williams won’t re-sign a deal with the Bears when his rookie contract is up.
“(Williams) might end up being what the Bears haven’t had in forever, which is a long time, franchise quarterback, top 10 guy,” Tucker said. “I would just say I would be discouraged at this point in the process, right? I would say it would be more surprising to me, like if I had to bet, okay, is Caleb Williams going to be the Bears’ starting quarterback in three years? I probably bet no, if I had to bet…
“I mean, and then it’s like the sacks he takes, and that went back to college, I don’t know, man, like that’s, that’s hard for quarterbacks to get rid of that if they have a tendency to take a lot of sacks. That’s hard for them to get rid of so we’ll see. Listen Bear fans are incredible. I hope he’s awesome. I hope that the Bears are awesome. It’d be fun if the Bears were back in the playoffs.”

Tucker thinks Williams is getting bad advice from his PR team about talking to Wickersham at all about not wanting to go to Chicago. He also thinks it’s a mistake not to talk to the media about it ASAP.
Chicago Bears fans are tired of the drama

Most Chicago fans online believe the issue between the Bears and Williams is over now that head coach Ben Johnson is at Halas Hall. They think the media is searching for drama in the boring time of the offseason. Fans voiced their agitation with Tucker’s comments on X.
“As a Rookie he threw for 3500 yards, 20 TDs and 5 INT with three OCs, a 2 HCs. Just insane hate,” wrote a fan.
“we’re still talking about pre-2024 draft stuff in may of 2025,” asked a poster.
“He doesnt owe anybody anything That’s the problem with the media. You all feel entitled to get answers you’re looking for,” argued another.
“talk about a guy just hunting for engagement and for clicks. to say this after one season and an article that came out is preposterous,” posted a fan. “Tucker’s always been anti-Caleb and a hot take artist.. mix the two together and here you go.”
“Chicago sports media is the worst thing ever created,” wrote another.

When Caleb DOES talk to the media, and they ask why he waited, I hope he says, “Because I live in the present, and that has nothing to do with me now! If y’all want to wallow in the past, go ahead! You clearly don’t need MY help to do that! Plus, you’ll feel all the more blindsided when this monster starts really cooking! You don’t make history without a LOT of preparation! I’m too busy doing THAT to play such silly games!”
