The Bears Add Depth To The Tight End Position

Rosario {during his days in Denver} will now play for his sixth NFL team.

LAKE FOREST- The Bears decided to make some changes at the tight end position again before the NFL season started. The changes that the Bears made during training camp didn’t quite work out the way they had hoped. That was made obvious by the releases of Gabe Miller and Leonard Pope. There was a lot of hype surrounding Fendi Onobun but it was only good enough to get him on the practice squad.

Concern about depth at the tight end position for the Bears had been building since OTAs in June. This especially held true after the release of Evan Rodriguez. So when the Bears set their roster and practice squad over the weekend, it looked the Bears were satisfied with what they had behind Martellus Bennett. As it turns out, they were not as they spent Labor Day wheeling and dealing.

The Bears traded a seventh round draft pick in 2014 to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for veteran tight end Dante Rosario. Rosario brings 99 career receptions with 1,106 career receiving yards and eight touchdowns with him to Halas Hall. The 28-year-old was a fifth round draft pick out of Oregon in 2007. He began his career with Carolina, then moved onto Miami, Dallas, San Diego and Dallas before being traded to the Bears.

His primary position is tight end but he can also be used as a fullback, H-back and slot receiver. His versatility and athletic ability will serve him well in Marc Trestman’s offense. Kyle Adams, who was primarily used as a blocker during his time in a Bears uniform has been released to make room for Rosario.

The Bears will get back to practice on Tuesday to prepare for Sunday’s season opener. Follow me on Twitter @GabeSalgado82
