The Chicago Cubs focus on the second half of the season

There is nothing wrong with a baseball fan having near heart attack and loss of breath moments throughout the later months of the season. This is something that normally doesn’t build up to full excitement and frustration in the first week of July unless your heart belongs to the north side of Chicago.

The first half of the season was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The cubbies started the 2016 season in full stride with a 25-6 start. Cubs fans all over the country were able to stand boldly in the fact that next year was finally here. All the noise was brought to almost a dead silence as the Cubs struggled to win six of the final 15 games of the first half of the season.

Chicago has been forced to battle more than just an opposing lineup the last few weeks. The original starting lineup has been picked apart by injuries. Any team in the majors would have begun to show signs of weakness after a stretch of games that hasn’t been seen in over a decade, including both 9 and 11 game road trips throughout the month of June and the first week of July.

I want to believe the remaining 74 games will be a reflection of the series finale in Pittsburgh last Sunday.

The Cubs pulled together and won when they absolutely had too. The Cubs will come out of the All-Star break still holding on to a seven-game lead over the Red Birds in the central division. I think any of us would have been more than happy with that kind of lead going into opening day. But still, every time I think about 6-15, I’m reminded of Murphy and that stupid C word I refuse to use in reference to farm animals.

The second half of the season doesn’t exactly start off on an easy note for the Cubs. Yes, other than a three-game trip to Wrigley North in Milwaukee against the Brewers, the remaining games in the month of August will be played in Chicago, including two games at the ballpark on the south side of town.

However, the stretch includes a 3 game series with the AL west leading Texas Rangers, the Mets who just brought out the broomsticks against the Cubs in New York, and three games against Seattle, who is hoping to turn their season around.

Hopefully, the Cubs have been playing for more than being a group of all stars and can get the season back in the direction they sprinted off to earlier in the year.
