Minnesota Twins v Chicago White SoxWith the White Sox being in fourth place before the series with the thought to be lowly Minnesota Twins, Robin Ventura was looking for a three game pick me up that turned into a wake up call for himself and the front office in Chicago. The Sox were swept by a team considered to be one of the worst in Major League Baseball and now sit in last place in the American League Central with a 7-10 record. The White Sox have shown for a couple of series in a row now that their offense is highly inconsistent, and that pitchers will have to cherish the leads when they have them.

Game one of the series was postponed due to cold weather and very windy  conditions. Thus, making this series a two game series with no makeup day set for the postponed game. One would think this would make the series easier for the Sox as they had an extra day of rest to prepare to play the Twinkies. Think again.

Game two of the series was either a pitcher’s duel or neither team really wanted to win. The Twins collected eight hits and eight walks and only plated two which tells me they really wanted the Sox to pull this one out, but the White Sx wouldn’t have any of it as Twins ace, Vance Worley got back on track after starting off the year with a 10.50 ERA. Not to take the spotlight away from Jake Peavy however, who also pitched a stellar game. The Sox would go on to lose this one in miserable fashion to former White Sox, Eduardo Escobar’s infield single.

Game three was a little less lively as far as offense goes, but both teams somehow put up more runs than they did the day before. Baseball is funny that way. Yet again, both starters, Scott Diamond for the Twins and Gavin Floyd for the Sox, pitched their butts off, but once the Sox went to their bullpen there was hell to pay for it. Offseason acquisition, Matt Lindstrom, came on to relieve Gavin Floyd and gave up three runs to open up the flood gates for the Twins who would go on to score one more en route to a 5-3 win and sweep of the South Siders.

With the Sox now in last place, they will welcome the Cleveland Indians to town in hopes of leap frogging them back into fourth place in the AL Central, and then into contention. Small steps must be taken to get back into the division race, but if the Sox offense can play up to par, I believe their pitching can carry them.
