With all of the talks about Joe Maddon potentially ending up on the Northside, the Cubs are also expected to be big players in the free agent market this season.
The Cubs need starting pitching to go with their already loaded potential lineup of hitting prospects and Gordon Wittenmyer hints that the Cubs could be after Jon Lester and Jake Peavy as a package deal. Both are upcoming free agents and several reports have linked the Cubs into heavy pursuit of Lester. That means Peavy, 33, could join him in Chicago.
In the report, Peavy talked about offering a package deal to all teams and not just the Cubs. But a return to Chicago with his buddy Lester could put the Cubs in good shape next season.
