Wood Slams Cubs past White Sox

Travis Wood hasn’t had much run support to work with all season, but today he helped his own cause.

Wood connected on a 2-1 pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to give the Cubs a 6-1 lead.

He also wasn’t bad on the mound either. Wood gave up just two earned runs through six innings on five hits.

He earned the win for the Cubs who have now won four in a row, including three against their crosstown rival White Sox.

The Sox offense continues to struggle as they have scored just six runs through three games against the Cubs. All three games were losses.

While the Sox still have hopes for the Central Division Championship, they must get going now. Losses to below .500 teams hurt them, including this series.

The Cubs got the scoring started early with a two out rally in the bottom of the second. Darwin Barney singled home Luis Valbuena, then following a Wood single, David DeJesus gave the Cubs their second run of the inning. The Cubs have scored first in every game of this series.

The White Sox answered with a Paul Konerko RBI single in the top of the fourth. But after that it was all Cubs.

The bottom of the Cubs lineup sparked them today. The six through nine hitters combined to go 8-12 with 6 RBI’s on the day.

They added six more runs, all on home runs and held on for a 8-3 win, and a series win in the Crosstown Cup. It’s the Cubs first Crosstown Cup since they invented a trophy for it a few years back. Since then, the rivalry hasn’t lived up to past expectations.

The Cubs outscored the White Sox 24-6 in the series.

Konerko finished with two hits and two RBI to lead the White Sox, who open up a three game series in Oakland tomorrow night.

The Cubs look to continue their win streak as they host the NL West leading Diamondbacks starting Friday at Wrigley Field.

Note: The postponed game from Tuesday still does not have a time or date set.
