Bears Face Two Early Blows

Yesterday at Bears practice was far from the best. First, the Bears lost Marquess Wilson to a collarbone injury who was expected to be the 3rd wide receiver behind Marshall and Jeffery. After hearing about that unfortunate injury, we learned that Bears tight end Martellus Bennett slammed rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller into the turf after the rookie tackled Bennett around the neck. The rest of the players on the field were quick to break up a scuffle that could’ve been worse than what it was. Coach Trestman ended practice early yesterday following the incident.

Marquess Wilson already had his surgery on his fractured collarbone this morning and everything went smoothly. There’s still no timetable yet on his return but there’s hope that he won’t miss more than a few games into the regular season. There’s always injuries that happen during practice and preseason to key veterans or a young guy such as Wilson, but the Bears are prepared to have another receiver step up in his absence for the number 3 spot. Chris Williams and Eric Weems are currently battling for the #3 receiver spot on the depth chart.

Preseason begins this Friday at 7 PM CST as the Bears host the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bears faced some big injuries last season, mostly on the defense. Hopefully the injury bug stays away throughout the season on both sides of the football. Marquess Wilson and Martellus Bennett will both play roles in the Bear success this year, especially Bennett, who hopefully gets himself together soon to continue to prepare for the upcoming season. I’m all for fire and energy on the field, but there’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed when practicing with your teammates. Competition among teammates can cause little fights to happen during practice, but when the same player (Bennett) has been involved in multiple fights with teammates within a couple weeks, actions need to be taken. Coach Trestman did just that by suspending Bennett indefinitely, but it’s not expected to be for a long time.
