The Fire were vying for their record 5th U.S. Open Cup Championship Tuesday, but the Sounders aspirations to become the first team to win three consecutive championships in 42 years proved greater. Seattle seemed to dominate most of the game, with the exception of a few lengths of Fire control. However, after Seattle hitthe goalpost, the Fire and Sounders found themselves tied at the end of the 1st half. In the second, Seattle came out in control of the ball again, but simply could not score on Johnson. Unfortunately, the record-setting crowd at CenturyLink Field was all the Seattle Sounders FC needed to keep them motivated, and they ultimately would score the game-winning goal, as Montero shot the ball past Johnson on a rebound in the 77th minute of play to make it 1-0. Though 1-0 would prove to be enough, Alonso scored a “walk-off” goal in the 5th minute of stoppage time to seal the deal as Seattle completed the three-peat.
Other Fire Notes: Sebastian Grazzini returned to action late in the match as he returned from injury after missing a couple games.
