The Chicago Cubs lost two of their three games this weekend against the New York Mets after scoring a total of 10 runs at Citi Field. The Cubs have scored just 16 runs in their last five games, four ended in losses.

Ryan Pressly’s nine-run 11th inning on Tuesday and Porter Hodge’s three-run eighth inning didn’t help matters, but the Cubs’ hitting in the last week has been troubling for what was the hottest offense in the league during April.

Chicago is set to begin their three-game series at Wrigley Field against the Miami Marlins with a 23-18 record and a one-game lead on the St. Louis Cardinals for first place in the NL Central.

Following Sunday’s 6-2 loss to the Mets in front of 41,673 fans at Citi Field, designated hitter Justin Turner voiced his frustration to the media with the Cubs’ offense this weekend.

“This is a lineup that grinds out at-bats and has a lot of different ways to score,” Turner said via Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times. “We just didn’t score enough this series.”

Turner has been one of the causes of the Cubs’ offensive woes. He went 0-2 Sunday, but did take one walk. Turner has one hit in his total eight at-bats in the last seven days. His batting average is .155 this season, and many fans in Chicago want the 40-year-old veteran to be DFA’d after a slow start.

Pitching was fine, but the offense is lacking

Cubs manager Craig Counsell agreed that the offense was a problem.

“[The Mets] pitched well today,” Counsell said. “We got a couple of big hits. We pitched really well to get a tie game to the eighth inning. But, in the end, not quite enough offense today.”

Fortunately for the Cubs, the team will play the Chicago White Sox in between two series against the Marlins. The bats should pick up for the next week and a half.
