MLB offseason: Chicago Cubs show interest in closer

MLB general managers are meeting this week in Orlando, Florida for the annual gathering of the GM’s. This usually sets the tone for next month’s Winter Meetings which really get the Hot Stove going.

While the GM’s are meeting down in Orlando a new report has linked the Chicago Cubs with one of the best closers in the game. Fan Rag Sports’ Jon Heyman wrote a story on Baltimore Orioles closer Zach Britton and this is where it gets interested.

Heyman wrote that the Cubs are one of the teams interested in Britton and have talked to the Orioles about the possibility. The other team he mentions? The Los Angeles Dodgers who beat the Cubs in the 2017 NLCS.

Here’s what Heyman writes:

The Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers are two of the teams that have spoken to the Baltimore Orioles about star closer Zach Britton, sources tell FanRag Sports. It is believed that a couple other teams also have checked in on Britton, one of the game’s best closers.

The Cubs are likely going to lose closer Wade Davis to free agency and are in need of a fix for their bullpen. Britton would step in and be the closer right away and the Cubs wouldn’t have to rely on someone like C.J. Edwards.

Chicago’s bullpen struggled a lot last season including the playoffs. Stabilizing the bullpen will be a major key this offseason.

While Chicago’s bullpen struggled, the Dodgers’ bullpen did the opposite for the most part. Their bullpen shut the door on teams in the playoffs, up into the final few games of the World Series.

LA has Kenley Jansen who has emerged as one of the top closers in baseball but adding Britton to the pen would make it that much better. They were interested in Britton at the deadline last season but couldn’t strike a deal.

The 29-year-old Britton had 15 saves and a 2.89 ERA last season for Baltimore and in 2016 he converted 47 of 47 saves chances.

If Chicago doesn’t land Britton, they could target Greg Holland or attempt to bring back Davis.
