Chicago Cubs Sign Pitcher Jose Veras to a 1-year Contract

According to Enrique Rojas of, the Chicago Cubs have agreed to terms with relief pitcher Jose Veras on a 1-year deal with a club option for 2015. Veras will make 4 million in 2014 and the club option is worth 5.5 million.

Jon Heyman reports the 4 million will be a base salary of 3.85 million and a buyout of 150,000. Veras can also make an extra 750,00 on games finished.

Veras is a 33-year old right-handed pitcher. Veras started last season with the Houston Astros and was later traded mid-season to the Detroit Tigers. With both the Astros and Tigers last season, Veras went 0-5 with a 3.02 earn run average and 21 saves in 69 appearances. After the season, the Tigers declined Veras option and he became a free agent.

The Cubs have been looking for a back end starter and Veras is a great pickup. He’s expected to be the closer for the Cubs in the upcoming season. Veras joins Wesley Wright as the new additions to the bullpen.

There’s no word on whether the Cubs are still in the market for a left-handed relief pitcher. The Cubs have been linked to Clayton Richard and Jonathan Sanchez.
