It’s that time of the season: Interleague play.
Looking to rebound from a tough loss to the Phillies, the Cubs (19-24) entered Friday hoping to start a new win streak.
Their opponents happen to reside in the Lone Star state but they aren’t the Astros. Instead the Cubs traveled to Texas to take on the Texas Rangers (25-18).
Unfortunately, the Cubs’ offensive woes continued into the American league.
Despite a quality outing by Ted Lilly (1-4), the Cubs could only muster 1 run against Colby Lewis (4-2) and the Rangers. Lilly only gave up 2 runs in 6.2 innings of work. Carlos Zambrano pitched 1.1 innings without allowing a run
The Cubs did strike 1st however. In the 2nd inning, Geovany Soto grounded into a double play but Mike Fontenot scored. That was the beginning and end of Chicago’s scoring.
Earlier in the day, the Cubs re-signed Bob Howry and optioned Justin Berg to the minors. To make room on the 40 man roster, the Cubs designated David Patton for assignment. Patton spent all year on the MLB roster for Chicago in 2009 in a Rule V situation.
The Cubs will look to take game 2 on Saturday. Randy Wells (3-2) will take the ball for the Cubs while the Rangers have Derek Holland (2-0) on the bump.
