Mother’s Day Weekend Preview: LAA v. SOX

This mother’s day weekend should be eventful for all, as children try and make up for all the crap they’ve put their mothers through their whole lives. Some sons will bribe their mothers into dealing with them for another year by taking them to a White Sox game this weekend. Fans should be aware that this series is probably the best series I’ve seen for the Sox, as far as promotions go, this year. Friday will be the “Cinco past de Mayo” fireworks day, Saturday the Sox will be giving away Paul Konerko bobbleheads, and of course, as in Mother’s Day past, the tote bag for our wonderful ladies. So if you’re looking to treat your mother this weekend to a day out, then by all means look at a day trip to the Sox game. Remember: mom’s don’t care about wins and losses, they just want to spend time with their sons or daughters.

Thus, everyone should keep that in mind when the Sox take on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this weekend, in a three game set. So far, the Angels are the second worst team in the American League, only thankful to the Astros for being worse. The fact that the Angels are so bad is stunning given they have Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Mike Trout, Mark Trumbo, CJ Wilson, and Jered Weaver, just to name a few of their star players. I don’t know what to make of this series as far as what fans should feel if the series doesn’t go our way. On one hand, if the Sox got swept it wouldn’t bother me because of how good the Angels should be, but on the other, they are very bad and shouldn’t be a team the Sox get swept by at this point. Obviously the only outcomes Sox fans want right now is a series victory, as the season looks like it’s starting to get out of hand.

This weekend should also treat fans to some outstanding pitching match-ups as the Sox have three of their better starters toeing the rubber for them. Dylan Axelrod will take the ball game one against Tommy Hanson. Axelrod has been exceeding expectations as of late, and looks to have a very bright future should he continue to throw the ball well. Robin Ventura will then allow Colombian, Jose Quintana to take the mound in game two against Jerome Williams. Quintana, was the surprise pitcher last year, coming up from Double-A, and made the rotation again this year. Q continues to pitch decent games and should keep the White Sox in the game on Mother-Son Night. For the potential rubber match on Sunday, it’ll be a battle of aces, Chris Sale will take on Anaheim’s C.J. Wilson. Obviously, Sale is the best pitcher on the White Sox and it is always a treat to watch him pitch.

Hopefully, the White Sox can take this series and get back into the wild card hunt in the American League. Every series is very important at this point and the Sox need to have a playoff type of mindset going into every pitch, inning, game, and series.
