The Marc Trestman era in Chicago has officially started. Phil Emery’s extensive search for the Bears’ head coaching job reached a conclusion. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reported early Wednesday morning that Marc Trestman would be taking the reigns in Chicago.
Trestman has been the head coach of the CFL’s Montrael Alouettes since 2008. He has led the team to two titles in five seasons, with three Grey Cup appearances. Trestman outlasted Colts OC Bruce Arians and Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell for the job.
Trestman has spent the past five seasons in the Canadian Football League as the head coach of the Montreal Alouettes. In his tenure with Montreal, he went 64-34 with back to back championships in ’09 and ’10. Before moving to the CFL, Trestman spent 17 years in the National Football League with multiple teams as an offensive coach and coordinator.
- Reached Super Bowl XXXVII as Offensive Coordinator/QB coach of the Oakland Raiders
- Reached two AFC Championship games as Offensive Coordinator/QB coach of the Oakland Raiders (2002) & Cleveland Browns (1989)
- Twice coordinated the #1 passing offense in NFL (49ers in 1995, Raiders in 2002)
- 13 Playoff appearances coaching with the Browns (Bernie Kosar), 49ers (Steve Young), Cardinals (Jake Plummer), Lions (Scott Mitchell) & Raiders (Rich Gannon)
- Coached NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 2002 (QB Rich Gannon)
- Served as Offensive Coordinator during Jerry Rice’s record-setting season of 1,848 yards and 15 TDs in 1995
- Guided 49ers to the #1 and #2 ranked passing offenses in the NFL as Offensive Coordinator in 1995 and 1996
- Directed the Cardinals offense to their 1st playoff victory in 51 years
Since Trestman’s name popped up in the Bears coaching search, a few of his former players have had high praise for him, including former 49ers quarterback, Steven Young.
”The CFL is just a place where he’s gotten to show that he’s a dynamic leader,” Young said in an interview on the ”Waddle & Silvy Show” on WMVP-AM. ”He’s a dynamic straight-shooter. He’s a soft-spoken guy, but the Bears with their defensive history … this is going to be a great hire.”
Now the teams’ focus will shift with who will Trestman be surrounding himself with? Will he retain Rod Marinelli as defensive coordinator? Whom will he bring in as offensive coordinator? Expect these questions to be answered in the coming days.

I’m a fan of the hire. Hope this will allow our offense to finally reach it’s potential. Martz/Tice shouldn’t have been allowed to touch this offense.
Can’t wait to see Cutler with Trestman..
