Friday evening the White Sox took the first step in their rebuilding process by trading away veteran left-handed reliever Matt Thornton. Thornton, an eight year veteran of the White Sox who was acquired in 2006 for Joe Borchard, will head to the Boston Red Sox. Thornton will fill a need in the Red Sox bullpen for pitchers who can eat innings and provide another lefty reliever for manager John Farrell to use in different situations. In return the White Sox receive Brandon Jacobs a outfielder who played most recently at Double A Pawtucket for the Red Sox.
In this writer’s opinion this is a great move by Rick Hahn and the front office as they got a toolsy outfield prospect for a pitcher who had seemed to lose his effectiveness on the South Side and had a fairly pricey contract option for next year at $6 million. Jacobs on the other hand is twenty-two years old who seems to get on base an awful lot, something the White Sox need. If Jacobs talent can convert from level to level then I would expect him to be an everyday contributor to the starting lineup one day.
